An active centre in spreading the Protestant faith after 1530 Clairac was repeatedly attacked by Catholic armies. Following the 1621 siege, led by Louis XIII in person, the city walls were razed to the ground.
In the 18th century, Clairac was one of the main harbours in the lower Lot valley and was the first place in Europe to grow tobacco. Clairac abbey contains a collection of automata presenting the life and work of the monks
