Perched on a hill above a buckle in the river Lède is the region’s biggest Bastide, Montflanquin. If you were to count the number of surviving Medieval town houses in south-west France said to be "The Black Prince’s House", you’d wonder how he found the time to sleep overnight in any one twice.

The rib-vaulted pretendant here in Monflanquin is squeezed between the market-place (whose cornières are the most complete of all the bastides, running right round the square) and the church and, judging from its rich ornamentation, was certainly an ‘upper class’ dwelling.

The market square itself contains a good museum all about Bastides, while everywhere you look 13th-15th century buildings and timber-framed facades glow goldenly back at you. Come in the summer for the Medieval Days’ costumed festivities for an even more memorable souvenir.
