From Castillo neu, New Castle. As it’s name suggests, Castillonès was built on the site of a ruined castle. High on a a rocky outcrop, the Bastide’s plan was drawn up along the natural lines of the hill by Alphonse de Poitiers in 1259 on the frontiers of the Agenais and the Périgord.
Repeatedly attacked and burnt during the Hundred Years War, the village still retains the essential outlay and many Bastide buildings. Fine arcaded central market place. Very fine views from the ruined ramparts across the Haut-Agenais.
