The four waterways > River Baïse

River Baïse (:S.S.-CG47) +

In the 18th and 19th centuries, barges tugged by mules or driven by sails descended the Baïse* to the Garonne, carrying wheat, wine, cork and Armagnac barrels to Bordeaux.

Following an extensive campaign of renovation, the Baïse is fast becoming a popular stretch of river for pleasure-boaters.

The Baîse valley displays the greens of a rain-splashed Gascon springtime like a well-cut casual garment worn with unaffected elegance. The undulating hills rippling away from the river’s leisurely swell are covered with the vines that give this region its past and present claim to fame, Armagnac, the oldest eau-de-vie in France.
