Canal Latéral ( :J.M.-CDT47) |
+ |
The Canal Latéral is 193 km long, of which 87 km are in Lot-and-Garonne and navigable, with 16 locks and several canal bridges, one on the Garonne at Agen, another on the Baïse at Buzet.
This canal is the extension to Bordeaux of Pierre-Paul Riquet’s Canal du Midi linking Béziers to Toulouse, thus enabling a boat to rally Bordeaux from Béziers, and justifying the Canal du Midi’s other name, « Le Canal des Deux Mers ». On the Lateral Canal, the waterway between Castets-en-Dorthe and Bordeaux is navigable.
