Lauzun on the Périgord border

The Duke of Lauzun started off son of a minor baron and won his titles through his "natural talents, good looks and charm". These worked on both Louis XIV and, much to the sovereign’s anger and astonishment, the Sun King’s mistress. After a stint in the Bastille, the Duke lived on defiantly to the age of 90 and added a domed pavilion to his château.
