Bastide fans will tell you that visits to their favourite places should always begin from the central market square and no where is that more true than here in Villréal. The covered market is a pièce de Bastide résistance.
14th century oak pillars support a square roof 30m x 30m, while the cherry on the cake is the municipal offices storey built atop the market in the 16th century. This is where all the town business was carried out and used to be a typical feature of many such towns.
Well-restored, timber-framed corbelled facades hanging over checkerboard streets and the thick, tall walls of Notre Dame church (there from the creation of the Bastide) all add to the place’s simple beauty, and timelessness.
